All other positions are currently filled except we always have the occasional string player moving on. The summer term would now be a very good time for any new players to apply and come and give us a try. String sections can normally add a new player or two at most times, but some areas in the orchestra have waiting players too. Do please contact us though if you are interested in playing in ESO.
Our main percussionist has raised the level of that section brilliantly, but there is a need for a second specialist player, so if that appeals do please let us know.
Finally, do let us know if you are at all interested in being part of this orchestra – even if there do not seem to be vacancies – since things can, and do, often change rapidly.
There are no formal auditions for prospective new players. Grade 7/8 is the minimum standard, and string players must be able to play in tune overall. Dont worry if you have not been in regular playing in the recent months. Membership is granted after attending a number of rehearsals and with the approval of the Musical Director, and the relevant section leaders. We also have a list of interested people to join a deputy list with a view to filling a place as/when it becomes available so do please make an enquiry.
The introduction works both ways – for the section leader to make an assessment – and for the new prospective member[s] to see if they like the orchestra and its way of working. Once full time, members must be prepared to commit for the full term. If you would like to join us, contact us through the link at the top of the page.
There are some very exciting concerts coming up this season and it would be good to make sure that people who are interested, or perhaps feel a little nervous about approaching us, should be encouraged to do so. Please feel free to enquire at all times. For all vacancies players of all ages should feel that they are welcome. Younger players, students, and musicians moving to the area for a period of placement and looking for wider orchestral experience – even if only for a year of commitment – should also feel welcome to apply.
